This is a vid I made using clips from the Canadian TV show Intelligence. I got the clips from Eyespot.com and the beat is from Lil' Kim's Whoa. Let me know what you guys think.
I fashioned it to look like a crime-hip-hop-telenovela ;)

Christian Chavez Comes Out
Singer in the famous Mexican pop group RBD and also telenovela actor, Christian Chavez declared earlier this month that he is gay, after compromising fotos of him and his boyfriend appeared on the internet. He further went on to admit that he and his Canadian boyfriend of the time, got married in Canada.
After coming back to Mexico City from a tour, fans met the group at the airport and many continue to support Christian.
“I respect and support him, in anything he decides, because it is his sexuality and I do not care, I only support him because I am his fan,” said one of the fans.
I think this is a big step for Mexican media. There are not many well known, gay men or women out there. In the novela Clase 406, he was paired up with Sherilyn and Sara Maldonado. I don't know too much about the storylin of Rebelde though, becasue I could never get into it. But now I wonder what kind of roles he will do if he continues acting?
Telenovelas usually do not have gay storylines. Some have, and have done this well. My favorite gay storyline was in Veran del 98, from Argentina. But usually as far as Mexican telenovelas, there is only room for gay people to play those off-the-top, typical roles, as hairdressers and designers.
Hopefully Christian has opend more doors for a new image of gay men in the Mexican media.

Americans Diss' English-Language Telenovelas
My Network TV, which lauched this fall, ancounced they're axing their english-language telenovelas because of failed ratings. Wow! Their past productions have included Fashion House, Wicked Wicked Games, and Watch Over Me.
Network President Greg Midel told TVWeek.com: “The five major networks spend enormous amounts on development, and I don't think we can outdo what they do in (such shows as) 'Family Guy' or 'Two and a Half Men' or 'House' or 'Grey's Anatomy... But I think there's some great reality projects out there that are available.”
At least he's realizing that their productions were not quality. They were emotionless. There was no passion in them. Telenovelas are hard work, because you have to captivate people five days a week. So, yes, it does take an enormous effort.
It's a shame though, that they could not succeed. Ugly Betty is hot only because it is working as a weekly serial. As a viewer, being asked to watch five times weekly can be daunting, so there must be a good story and somewhat good acting.
Beyonce and Alejandro Fernandez sing telenovela theme song!
The classic story of El Zorro, which has been adapted for the telenovela format, airs five days a week on Telemundo at 9pm.
The American diva, Beyonce Knowles, and the soulful Mexicans singer, Alejandro Fernandez, contribute their song Amor Gitano. In April, Beyonce will re-release her album, Bday, with six new tracks in Spanish, including the versions of Deja Vu, Ring the Alarm, Irreplaceable, and a duet with the beautiful Shakira.
El Zorro is the first telenovela to be produced entirely in HD. That's a big step for telenovelas. It looks like a movie, and it's full of passion and action. It stars the Peruvian telenovela pro, Christian Meier, and the breakout Mexican actress Marlene Favela.

Ugly Betty Snags NAAPC Best Comedy Award
Sorry! I was gone for a long minute, but I'm back now.
Ugly Betty is proving to be wildly popular. The story of an unseemly, yet intelligent woman, working in the fashion industry who falls in love with her boss and slowly ends up snagging not only him, but the whole company as well.
This story started out as a telenovela in Colombia in 2000. Yo Soy Betty La Fea has inspired remakes not only in the U.S., but also Mexico, Spain, Israel, Germany, Turkey, Russia, Greece, and China. Several more in the works.
The Mexican version, La Fea Mas Bella, can be seen on Univision, M-F, at 8pm. This version is not bad. Usually I like Angelica Vale, who plays the main character, but for some reason she annoys me in this telenovela. I think maybe the writers make the story too silly.

Wild Rose
This is one of my favorite telenovelas of all time. It was made in 1987 in Mexico, and stars the beautiful Veronica Castro and the hunky Guillermo Capetillo.
This story is about a poor girl named Rosa, who dresses like a boy, and is always getting into trouble. One day she meets the perfect man: Ricardo. He is rich, handsome, and a gentleman. Immediatley she falls in love with him.
Ricardo, however, is tired of his Sisters always nagging him to settle down and start a family. So he decides to marry the poor, uneducated girl just to get a rise out of his sisters. Poor Rosa thinks he loves her though. She moves into Ricardo's family's mansion, and must suffer the humiliations Ricardo's evil sisters put her through.
In the end, she learns the marriage was a joke, and returns to her old life. Ricardo realizes he truly loves Rosa and does not want to hurt her. Also, Rosa finds her birth mother, Paulette, a rich and lonely woman who was forced to abandon her newborn baby.
This story is the perfect rags to riches story, typical of most telenovelas. And Veronica Castro makes the story even better. It is currently being shown in the US on Telefutura, Monday to Friday at 8 am.

My Life is a Telenovela
I love telenovelas (soap operas in Spanish) and I'm going to blog about them. I started watching them at a young age with my parents (who are from Mexico) and was immediatly captivated.
Spanish was my first language as a baby, but when my brother and I entered school, my parents started to speak to us only in English, fearing we would have trouble in school if they continued to speak to us in Spanish. So little by little, I forgot most of my Spanish.
I was about 11 when I started to sit and watch a full episode of a telenovela. It was called Alondra. At first I didn't understand most of the words. But the overall production was so well done, that anyone from anywhere could understand whats going on. Before I knew it, I started to enjoy and understand more and more, and I was hooked.
Telenovelas are stories about love, revenge, humility, cheating, money, pain, hope, triumph of good over evil, karma, struggle, freedoom, chance, and fate. And most importantley: LOVE! It sounds cheesy, and it is. They can even sometimes be predictable. But there is the difference between a good one and a bad one.
What makes them so captivating is that they are usually one hour episodes, monday to friday, for anywhere from 3 months to a year. So the story has a begining, middle, end, and then a new one begins all over again.
The whole world has caught on to this format and are now hundreds of telenovelas are produced all over in many different countries. It's established style involves such crazy and over-the-top storylines and characters that it is hard not to watch.

Welcome to my Blog!
I'm going to write about Telenovelas. For now, I'm just going to write generally, not focusing on one particular telenovela, but just my favorites, and what I like about telenovelas. I've done some research, and found a few good sites. Although there are not many good or useful sites in general, there are many dedicated to one particular telenovela.
1. This one is called The Gardener's Daughter, and it recaps the episodes of the telenovela of the same title. What I like about this site is that it is also about general telenovela news, and also other ones. And best of all, it is in english, talking about telenovelas in spanish! The only thing I don't like about it is that there are possibly too many ads.
2. Telenovelas, is actually a long recap of the whole telenovela Cuando Seas Mia (When You're Mine). It looks like this person sat down and wrote a recap of each episode and then posted it all in one day. The site looks and reads good, but there is not much else to it.
3. TV Brasil is a really good site, becasue it covers Brazilian telenovelas, which are often dubbed into Spanish and crazy popular througout Latin America, as well as the world. This site is for all the Spanish speaking fans of Brazilian telenovelas.
