Christian Chavez Comes Out

Singer in the famous Mexican pop group RBD and also telenovela actor, Christian Chavez declared earlier this month that he is gay, after compromising fotos of him and his boyfriend appeared on the internet. He further went on to admit that he and his Canadian boyfriend of the time, got married in Canada.

After coming back to Mexico City from a tour, fans met the group at the airport and many continue to support Christian.

“I respect and support him, in anything he decides, because it is his sexuality and I do not care, I only support him because I am his fan,” said one of the fans.

I think this is a big step for Mexican media. There are not many well known, gay men or women out there. In the novela Clase 406, he was paired up with Sherilyn and Sara Maldonado. I don't know too much about the storylin of Rebelde though, becasue I could never get into it. But now I wonder what kind of roles he will do if he continues acting?

Telenovelas usually do not have gay storylines. Some have, and have done this well. My favorite gay storyline was in Veran del 98, from Argentina. But usually as far as Mexican telenovelas, there is only room for gay people to play those off-the-top, typical roles, as hairdressers and designers.

Hopefully Christian has opend more doors for a new image of gay men in the Mexican media.

I haven't seen any of these telenovelas, but I've heard of RBD. I think you are right, it's difficult to admit to be gay in Latin America and still get a job on TV or movies. I don't think it's likely he'll get any good roles as an actor anymore, which is sad.

I'm from Chile, and heard there was a telenovela--which we call teleseries by the way--that was very popular in my country and in Spain a couple of years ago. It was called Machos. It was about four brothers, one of them was gay. Of course that was one of the key dramatic points in the series.

I never really got to see it because I was already living here, but I would like to know how they dealt with the topic...

This is something that I would have never known. I'm not familiar with telenovelas nor am I familiar with popular Mexican singing groups. Good for this guy for admitting his true self. It is so hard for some people especially when their career is in the spotlight. It almost seems like it’s the thing to do these days and it’s good that homosexuals are feeling comfortable enough to admit who they are. First T.R. Knight from Grey’s Anatomy and the biggest shocker was Doogie Howser Mr.Neil Patrick Harris himself. This proves that it doesn’t matter what a person’s sexuality is they still have what it takes to be professionally successful.
